Durian is the ‘King of fruits’ in Asia. The name durian comes from the Malay word "duri" meaning thorn. Its pale yellow flesh is creamy and sweet and accompanied by a strong scent. Yet for most Asians, durian has long been considered a delicacy. Its odour is so unique that hotels and airlines ban customers from carrying the durian and many foreigners cannot bring themselves to sample the flesh – but it is well worth it!Durian can grow into large, oblong shaped fruit with the green skin covered in hard, short spikes. When split open, the inner yellow flesh is revealed. Inside the creamy flesh are large seeds. As well as eaten fresh, durian is also cooked into a paste and used in Thai desserts. |

Mangosteen is the ‘Queen of tropical fruits’. It has a thick, dark-red skin, inside which are creamy white segments with a sweet, slightly tart flavor; as a general rule, the more segments it has, the fewer seeds one will find. A knife is used to slit the skin around the middle, after which it opens easily and the flesh can be eaten with a fork as a memorable after-meal treat. There are five or six small segments of white flesh contained within the hard, dark reddish purple outer shell. When ripe, the outer shell yields to slight pressure and cracks easily to reveal the soft, white flesh with a refreshing sweet and tangy taste. |

Lychees

Longan is another small, round, sweet tropical fruit. Longans have a rather drab, beige skin coloring, but once peeled the flesh is clear white and very sweet. Inside the fruit harbors a hard black seed. Longans are usually sold in bunches with the stalks still attached. |

Lychee is another export product. Many foreigners are familiar with the tinned, processed fruit. The fresh fruit is small, round and spiky and red in color. Once peeled, the flesh is white and contains a black seed. |
